Small business owners in the U.S. are approaching 2026 with renewed optimism and ambitious plans for growth, according to Citizens’ Q1 2026 Business Pulse survey. The study, conducted in November 2025, reveals that 64% of small businesses with revenue between $500,000 and $4.9 million anticipate revenue growth in the first quarter of the year, underscoring a trend of positive expectations across the sector.
Expansion is a primary focus, as 60% of surveyed business owners plan to deploy more capital to enhance efficiency and strengthen revenue streams. Of those investing in growth, 64% expect to rely on a business credit card during the quarter, while 47% intend to request a credit limit increase to support their objectives. These findings highlight a strategic push to access and manage financial resources effectively.
Talent acquisition also remains a priority for smaller enterprises, with 41% of respondents planning to recruit new employees in Q1. This focus on workforce expansion reflects confidence in long-term growth and the ability to meet increasing demand in their respective markets.
Mark Valentino, Head of Business Banking at Citizens, highlighted the resilience of entrepreneurs in navigating challenges and remaining steadfast in their pursuit of success. “Small business owners are demonstrating creativity, resilience, and determination. This surge in optimism suggests the entrepreneurial engine is not just surviving but accelerating, positioning small businesses for robust growth in 2026,” Valentino said.
