Global Search Usage Jumps 26% Since ChatGPT Launch

A new study reveals a 26% surge in global search usage since AI tools like ChatGPT entered the scene. A separate report highlights that over 60% of small businesses have yet to see any impact on their website traffic from AI-powered search technologies.

The research, conducted by Graphite and Similarweb, analyzed the top 40,000 US websites. It found that AI tools are driving a significant boost in search activity as users adopt these alternatives alongside traditional engines. According to Eli Schwartz of ProductLedSEO, users are not replacing Google with systems like ChatGPT but are using both for distinct purposes—AI platforms for conversational queries and Google for direct informational searches.

A separate analysis by WordStream, presented in the 2026 Small Business Website Trends Report, reveals a contrasting view for small businesses. Around 60% reported no notable changes in traffic due to the growing use of AI-driven tools, indicating more time might be needed for these dynamics to reshape the SEO landscape fully.

How AI and Traditional Search Are Coexisting

While the rise of AI search platforms has been swift, they haven’t displaced traditional search engines. Instead, users are leveraging both technologies for their unique strengths:

  • AI tools like ChatGPT excel at conversational and contextual queries.
  • Google remains dominant for fast, specific answers and high-trust results.
  • Search behavior is diversifying, driving a net increase in global search volume.

For businesses, this underscores the importance of maintaining balanced strategies that address both traditional SEO and emerging AI-driven platforms.

What Does This Mean for Businesses Online?

For AI and technology enthusiasts, web developers with WordPress clients, and SEO professionals, this trend signals that diversification is key. Growing adoption of AI in search requires businesses to optimize their digital presence for both types of platforms to stay ahead.

AI Search Optimization offers tools to navigate this evolving search landscape effectively.
